MAN Diesel & Turbo cooperation with Opcon Powerbox for fuel and emission reductions

The aim is to investigate combining the technologies of Opcon�s Powerbox waste-heat-recovery (WHR) expertise with MAN Diesel & Turbo�s diesel engines to cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions. WHR has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by increasing energy efficiency

The Opcon Powerbox is a stand alone Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery system. Waste heat from the engine exhaust and cooling water is recovered by a heat exchanger and used to vapourize a low boiling point fluid. As the gas expands over an expander, it powers a SRM turbine driving a generator to produce electricity. The fluid is then cooled, and a pump increases its pressure to 30 bar, to circulate it back through the heat exchanger.

It is unusual in that it can function with low temperature installations and can therefore operate with smaller power engines. According to the manufacturers, the Powerbox can offer fuel consumption savings of between five and ten per cent. It directly cuts carbon, NOx and sulphur emissions.

The first practical installation will be in Wallenius shipping group�s newbuild with a MAN B&W 8S60ME-C8 engine to harness waste heat for electricity production.

Opcon is a Swedish based international group with over 100 years experience in technology development. The group concentrates on the two main areas of renewable energy and engine efficiency.
