Tale of two taxpayers: How Gina Rinehart and Andrew Forrest took different paths

The Tax Transparency Act has had a long and chequered career since it was first proposed by former Treasurer Wayne Swan.

It was overturned by the Turnbull Government with the perhaps inadvertent help of independent Senator Nick Xenophon, and finally reinstated last December via some horse-trading between the government and the Greens that lifted the disclosure threshold for private companies to $200 million.

The government opposed the disclosure measure, and given the limited nature of the information revealed and the loopholes that the higher threshold opened up, it looks like the Greens were outplayed.

It's not all loss. Four months out from an election, a list of how much private companies earn is invaluable for political parties who now know not just who to target, but how much to target.

Several large family companies lobbied against the disclosure, claiming that revealing their wealth would leave them open to kidnap or extortion bids.

They probably meant Liberal Party fundraisers.
