How is it that lawyers are despised for being dishonest conniving thieving liars, but once they progress to being a judge they gin an aura of respectability?

In Pennsylvania several years ago, a number of judges were convicted of criminal conspiracy. All they did was own shares in a privately owned prison system for juveniles. (conflict of interest??)
Oh yes, they did receive presents from the prison company, and yes they was a surge in the number of juveniles being sent to prison for trivial charges. Coincidence.
