I assure you that it is very possible and is in fact the case.
The product sold by daigou (English label) and in MBS (China label) are different products. Yes, they run promos sometimes but the price difference always remains very substantial.
China label contains Lactoferrin, a tamper-proof lid, and undergoes batch testing for COVID on arrival in China. Many Chinese consumers trust the process of buying physically in store more than online.
However, China label is also sold via domestic e-commerce and so you can see the price listed there (488 RMB is $97 AUD) as well as tens of thousands of verified purchases and reviews (which I think have slightly more weight than your "Chinese mate").
I also imagine there is some discounting and promotional activities when the product is added to a new store as part of the in-store activation to drive initial sales. But check out how the MBS segment is performing relative to ANZ IF and CBEC, and you will see that there is clearly a strong demand for China label even at a substantial premium in terms of pricing.
