Who benefits from this tragedy? The extremists from both sides.
Whoever has actually done it, ISIS and other Islamists will hope the people who hate Islam will get recruits, as that will mean the Islamists will get more recruits. The more anger that ordinary Muslims will feel from people who are outraged by this despicable attack, the more alienated they will feel, and the greater chance of radicalisation. Then the more attacks on Western society that occurs, the more moderate people there will be to radicalise to hate Islam and all Muslims.
The idea of extremists is to squeeze the centre and the moderates, and to force them to hate the other side.
Or we could just let the security forces do their job. Since the 1970s and the Baader-Meinhof terrorists, they've successfully seen off a raft of these scumbags. And if the US President doesn't enter a financial partnership with the principal paymaster of Wahabee Islamist terrorism (oh wait, he just has) Western security forces will get on top of this too.

Funny you should mention the Baader Meinhof gang.
I was just thinking about the fact that all of the remaining members of the gang suddenly committed suicide in a high security German prison on the same day or thereabouts.
That problem was suddenly resolved.
