There should be mandatory sentences for murder, rape, and so on in all states in Australia. Civil liberterians, judges, the legal profession will be up in arms about this, but the vast majority of the population would support such a move imo.
I am not a lawyer, but i feel very upset for a victims family when someone is sentenced to 'life' in prison when we all know that that rarely means 'life' - more like 15 years.
Judges are there to apply the law of parliament...parliament is representative of the people.
I think that mandatory terms need to be set for offences...
25 years mandatory for murder 15 years for rape and so on
Judges, lawyers etc hate this...it takes the power away from them. The general population, i believe, are strongly for this.
