"Global sea ice cover hits record low due to ongoing climate change"
"6th March 2025 – (Brussels) The Copernicus Climate Change Service, funded by the EU, reported on Thursday that global sea ice cover has reached an unprecedented low in early February, highlighting the continuing trend of planetary warming.
"According to the report, the daily global sea ice extent, which aggregates measurements from both polar regions, set a new record minimum in early February, remaining below the previous low recorded in February 2023 for the remainder of the month.
"Specifically, Arctic sea ice extent was 8 percent below the average, marking the third consecutive month of record lows for that period.
"Meanwhile, Antarctic sea ice extent was 26 percent below average, representing the fourth-lowest extent for February on record.
"The report also noted that February 2025 was the third-warmest February globally, with an average surface air temperature of 13.36 degrees Celsius. This figure is 1.59 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, making it the 19th month out of the past 20 in which global average surface temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels—an important threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement.
"Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, commented, “One of the consequences of a warmer world is melting sea ice, and the record-low sea ice cover at both poles has pushed global sea ice extent to an all-time minimum.”"
