I have downloaded the data from many sites in Aus. And what you find is a predominantly anti correlation with temperature but at times when correlated at reversal occurs as shown above. Intersting. Will have a look at that.
The polynomial reference you make would be a better idea for most of the charts I have done. This would indicate something that Richard Linzden talks about and the IRIS effect.
