Alluvial deposits may demonstrate a relative homogeneity on a localised scale, & I'm referring to Au deposits here, but on a geological scale they are almost so fickle as to make it impossible to make an estimate of the resource. After all, the depositional environment depends on a number of conflicting forces - water, wind, landslides, weathering this way & that. I reckon this is a good part of the delay in the Sellhiem release. Statistically they almost always demonstrate a high scatter of grades, especially if nuggetty like Sellhiem.
Usually the only true test of the resource is to dig it up & throw it in a mill.
What you have quoted is typical of an academic. I would contend that chasing an Au rich vein demonstrates a greater geological continuity than standing in a paddock with a metal detector.
