The following reasons were provided:
a) The debate could lead to damaging repercussions for gay and lesbian communities and individuals
b) It is expensive
c) We already have elected representatives that determine acts of parliament and this is no different
d) Precedent. The marriage act has been changed by acts of parliament previously
e) It is irresponsible to put a matter of human rights to a plebiscite
f) The wording of the question put down for the plebiscite
