"Imagine if the banks went to someones house and said, risk dept thinks this XXXXX suburb is not worth us lending into. You currently have a loan of 75% of the property.
Please reduce it to 50% by tomorrow at 2pm or we will auction it to the highest bidder".

Scary thing is that the banks can, and have done this exact thing. In a previous credit crunch an American bank went through their loan book and picked out those who had always paid their mortgages, they then went to them and demanded immediate repayment in full, all because the bank itself was short of cash. Luckily the particular family I know of was able to scrape up the cash from friends and family so didn't lose everything. Others weren't quite so lucky.
