"World champion Mark Webber" were the words Australians longed to hear during his combative career in Formula One, which was as frustrating as it was distinguished.
While F1's top prize eluded him, even when he was with the best team in the final four of his 12 seasons, Webber is finally a world motor racing champion, albeit in a discipline of the sport that he would never have anticipated winning a title until very recently.
He clinched the World Endurance Championship driver's crown in the Six Hours of Bahrain sports car endurance race on Sunday, sharing the title with his Porsche co-drivers, New Zealander Brendon Hartley and German Timo Bernhard.
Solely focused on F1 from the start of his car racing career 21 years ago, Webber only considered a change when Porsche approached him to lead its comeback to the sports car world championship last year.

Well done @Aussiegrit. A world championship at last.

    Congratulations, Mark. You deserve it.
