The market has just adjusted the stock price, shorters are kicking in (I'm afraid they are) and they will continue to rock this boat making profits at shareholders' expense.

I'd like to believe that we experience scenario 1, but it is more likely to be number 2.

Number 2 for me as well. As for shorting I am not sure I agree with you there. Mid Feb this year it was approx 6.3% of capital with the share price at $4.48. Dec 4 it was 3.6% when the share price closed at $3.95. It will be interesting to see the numbers at the end of next week.
