Although a market crash like 1987 etc is almost technically impossible now due to circuit breakers etc, lets just assume that the overall magnitude of stock falls are similar in all crashes.
Consider this for a moment: 1929 - the stock markets didn't reach the top levels until 1954...that's quite some wait...
Dunno if the holding strategy would work well in my lifetime if that were to occur...
