may I ask - since call and put options are available, why can't those be used instead of shorts?
The way I understand it the options do not affect the share market (maybe not much, I think?).
Shorts seem to destroy confidence in companies which is very difficult to recover from, if at all.
Also it seems that if anyone wanted to manipulate the SP then shorting would be one of the primary methods to choose (in combination with other actions).
So, what calamity would fall on the market if shorting was removed?
