Sorry in advance for my atrocious mixing of metaphors but I believe it is whales shaking the tree, hoping to scare inexperienced holders into selling out. They wish to accumulate at the cheapest price possible (like the rest of us) and have developed techniques as described earlier in this thread which work.
It's all a bit dog eat dog unfortunately but it is basically trading on greed and fear which are primary motivations for us humans. If, however, you can keep them somewhat in check, it merely comes down to an individuals strategy where at any given time we can hold, buy or sell. For me, having held and accumulated over a number of years, and being aware of the potential deals on the near and medium-term horizon, I opt to hold and will sell a portion to derisk and free carry the balance at a time of my choosing.
