I think it's symbolic for at least two reasons. One is that the G7 already had restrictions on buying gold from Russia, so just an attention grabbing symbolic headline.

And two, it's showing in itself how valuable gold is in today's modern world, in that this was the priority top news from the first day of the G7 meeting. So the "good guys" are showing the western media, we're not buying the "naughty man's" gold, in order to stop him and his country from being rich and powerful. Largely symbolic in a positive way for gold, in that the top nations are associating gold with wealth and power to the masses, and the masses will now question their cryptocurrency beliefs as it's now appearing worthless
