Yes bacci but the law is designed to protect moral beliefs. Its the fabric of society. You say two people making promises to each other, but the question is how may that affect others involved in their lives down the track? Again I am not justifying or arguing against gay marriage, I am just qualifying the comment that marriage is not a law issue but a moral issue. To me law and morality go hand in hand. Adultery is not a legal issue because general society does not consider it morally unjust. In fact it is commonplace now. A perfect example of how changes in moral stance affect the law and vice-versa.
