I think you will find that to be partially fact and partially fiction.
A lot of marriages break down because one of the parties to the marriage can't put up with the behavior of the other party to the marriage.
Usually one if not both of the parents still have the best interests of the children at heart. Yes there are also couples that neither parent give a rats about the kids. Just look at the number of children in foster care to see if both parents are not up to the task.
