The State should get out of the marriage business.
It should treat all people as individuals and have no interest with our personal affairs with other people.
If one (as in Japan), two (as here) or three (as in Saudi)want to call themselves married thats their affair. If they want their religion involved thats between them and their religion.
Christenings, marriages and funerals are best left to the religions.
Before anyone brings children into this remember that the laws about children cover defactos equally already, there are the same whether single, defacto or married.
