"DS, I'm sure a lot of the population are disgusted by the rise of MMA."

This kind of baseless statement stinks of supercillious egoism.

which research are you using to make such a ridiculous statement? Certainly looking at popularity it would seem a lot of the population are certainly not disgusted by MMA.

the way you use the word population - are you implying that you are somehow not part of the populace but instead live apart from us, the great unwashed, in some tower of rightous intent, far away from the MMA loving throng? maybe you are up aboveus all making a observation of what the little people are liking or not liking?

lifelong fighter and fight fan with a Phd.

you have no permission on anyone's behalf when you make that statement except maybe yourself. If you are disgusted, so be it but that's as far as you right to express opinions on any subject goes.

    MMA facts:
    - No greater rate of injury compared other striking based combat sports and when including grappling as a way to end a fight actually less damaging overall than boxing: http://www.jssm.org/combat/1/18/v5combat-18.pdf

    - about half the number of ko's than boxing and therefore proposed significant decrease in brain injury amongs competitors.

    - the major components of MMA are sanctioned olympic sports: freestyle wrestling, greco roman wrestling, TKD (kicks), boxing and Judo.

Does this mean the "population" is disgusted by the rise of combat sports in the olympics?

    - significantly less serious injury and deaths than WWE style wrestling with lower incidences of illicit drug use and that is classed as PG entertainment and has scripted endings. are people disgusted by that?

http://prowrestling.about.com/od/whatsrealwhatsfake/a/wrestlersdeaths.htm of course it's not an academic reference but pro wrestler deaths is hardly academic research.

    your second point
"Society is just becoming more and more impartial to this type of violence, and then wonder why it is becoming increasingly common in pubs and clubs"

Absolutely ridiculous that would try and link the rise of MMA to your assumption that society is becoming more violent.
    http://www.aic.gov.au/statistics/violent%20crime.aspx

Australian reported assaults have increased per 100 000, kidnapping, sexual assault, murder and robbery have stayed the same or in the case of robbery, dropped. You see MMA a driver of this? what about the influx of immigration from non traditional immigration nations, what about the perceived weakness of the law in dealing with this? what about the increased incidence of reporting - more crimes actually being reported.

once again you make a statement that is demonstrably false. Ever played a game like call of duty? Skyrim? MMA is tame.

your last point - the most ridiculous of all:

"No disrespect to the fighters, they are supreme athletes, but one has to wonder why we need this "sport" in peoples faces"

why the inverted commas around sport? are you too good to be an mma fan? is a sport only a sport if you think it is?

why do we need football, afl or league - certainly more serious knee injuries, shoulder injuries in these sports. certainly more incidences of AFL/League players assaulting people than MMA fighters. What about the dog baiting incident in the NFL a few years ago?

Golf - is it even a sport when a fat smoker who lives on a cheeseburger diet washed down with scotch can make any money at all let alone a good living?

why do we need any of these sports at all? Seeing MMA separate from these sports is just plain stupid.

if people like it who are you to judge? don't watch it and certainly don't make generalisations based on absolutely nothing but your own prejudice about the people who do like it.
