He mentions the armies track record here but seems to ignore what the rebels get up to. I've just posted half a dozen news reports stating that the town of Kilwa had been overrun by 100 or more heavily armed militia causing the terrified townspeople to flee, the army was called in to settle the situation. One wonders why this is coming out 9 months after the event. There were NGO organisations in Kilwa at the time, MSF and a UN agency. I haven't seen anything from these organisations that critises Anvil for assisting in transporting the army in to restore order.

Here's the relevant text from Oxfam:

Aid agency Oxfam's executive director Andrew Hewett said the deaths could have been avoided, had Anvil adhered to international human rights standards.

"Blind Freddy can see that companies should not be lending transport to armies that have a track record of human rights violations," Hewett told Australian Associated Press. my comments: not even to save a town you believed was overrun by militia?

"A lot of people might still be alive if Anvil hadn't, by its own admission, assisted the army in a brutal crackdown." my comments: a lot of people might be dead if nothing was done, easy to sit back and judge with all the facts 9 mths after the event, a bit harder at 2am in the morning with gunfire going on around you? A brutal crackdown? The friggin' town was invaded!

Melbourne legal firm Slater and Gordon said it is considering civil action against Anvil on behalf of three Congolese people affected by the massacre, including one woman whose two sons were killed.

"I think the company ought to have known, because it's a matter of record of the reputation of the Congolese military in terms of brutality," Slater and Gordon lawyer Richard Meeran said. I would think rebels shooting up a town in what was considered a peaceful provence would want to be put down brutally

"It's important that companies that get involved in this type of thing should be held to account." better to be like the UN and turn tail and run? Nice attitude
