If the Libs had been in when Ken Henry released his report and they decided to take up his recommendation on what is really a resources rent tax, no one would be batting an eye lid.
The worst thing that the government did was to dream up such a silly name for the tax. They handed the opposition a gift opportunity to whack them in the eye.
This whole issue has been more about perceptions than fact. The miners have been asking for the taxation regime to be reorganised and now their wish has been granted.
