I have been referred to as 'mate' by many people, I have also referred to many people as my mates. These include a group of friends I have known for over 50 years, we meet regularly both men and women, I have been introduced to people as 'this is my mate ....." I am female, I think it is inclusive enough. It means friendship and unity as far as I am concerned.
