    this same question relying on emotional thought rather than cold logic was around at least 20 years ago.

    In those days, the $30 purchase was a bottle of scotch ordered by 3 friends sharing a motel room. (Scotch then was a lot cheaper and watches a lot dearer.)

    The answer is obvious if you don't go where you are being led.

    The $30 watch/scotch turned out to only cost $25.

    The 3 guys collectively put $30 in.

    They got their scotch/watch for $25 total.

    Each got $1 back so they paid collectively $27.

    This $27 equates to thei $25 purchase plus their $2 tip.

    There is no missing $2.
