"If you read a Greek Bible the word for helper is in the masculine gender whereas the word for spirit is in the neuter gender. The promised helper is God's active force and not a person."

It means nothing when talking of a God being male or female. God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are neither. In any case, there are many reasons to beleive the Holy Spirit is a "person". I have already given examples. Here are some more.

The Holy Spirit is indeed a divine person because He possesses a mind, emotions, and a will. The Holy Spirit thinks and knows (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). The Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27). He makes decisions according to His will (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). As God, the Holy Spirit can truly function as the Comforter and Counselor that Jesus promised He would be (John 14:16, 26; 15:26).
