And what are the works that Jesus references here = The Word, words coming out of him, of the Fathers, making Jesus the express image of the God and Fathers person Heb 1:3 KJV.

The only other possible plausible translation for John 1:1, 2 which I don't follow, would be the likes of the following, when considering the scriptures and theme, on the whole.

In beginning was the Word and the Word was (ongoing, in progress, plan) = toward The God and a God to be after the cross (John 1:18) and seated at the RHS of The God, ruling for him until death no more, was the Word. (logos/plan, part of as Gens was another part, for the one to be).
1:2 This; (Plan) was in beginning (ongoing, in progress, plan) = toward the God. (ex Titus 1:2)
1:4 In Him (The God/Father) was life - words of Spirit and life to which he gave to the Son to have life in himself John 17:8, 5:26, 6:63,68.

And part of the logos/plan became flesh = Luke and NOT in John 1:14 And Word Man (existing - Luke) became = on the scene and dwelt among us and we beheld the glory (words) of him, glory (words) as only begotten by the side of the Father, full of grace and truth John 17:8, 17:17, 17:22.

And the Jesus says -> Only Few find = Truth.
