Interesting read on Mawar-1. Could be reading too much into it but well status is suspended and not P&A. From memory they did complete drilling early at Mawar - is it possible that they may return the rig to Mawar to test the possibility of deeper oil play at Mawar if next well also completes early?

Bandar Seri Begawan - Tap Oil Limited has announced it has come across data from Mawar1 well that indicates oil at levels deeper than the 1,292m measured depth (MD) it has so far reached.

In a press release issued yesterday, TAP Oil said it has suspended drilling in the Block M onshore well after reaching the said depth. Gas has been encountered in the primary Ridan objective.

"We are, however, pleasantly surprised by the oil indications from the deeper Rampayoh Series," said Peter Stickland, chief ,executive officer of Tap Oil. "This was an unexpected result but further investigation will be needed to determine if this has commercial potential in Mawar-1 and also its implications along the Belait trend."

"We are disappointed that the primary objective (Ridan formation) appears to be gas charged at this location. Further studies will be undertaken to determine if there is potential for (further drilling)," said the CEO.

Mawar-1 will now be suspended before relocating the rig to the nearby Markisa-1 location.

Mawar-1 well has completed its wireline logging, pressure and fluid sampling.

"Preliminary log analysis suggests Mawar-1 has encountered up to 25m of Ridan reservoir at a depth of 1,005m MD. The presence of gas in this interval is indicated by pressure analysis and sampling. The thickness and quality of the Ridan Sandstone is poorer than expected pre-drill," Tap Oil said in their statement.

The press statement added that the deeper secondary objective, Rampayoh Series, had good hydrocarbon indications in cuttings and sidewall cores in an inter-bedded sand-shale sequence.

Fluid samples have been taken at 1,040m MD and 1,048.6 m MD. These samples remain sealed for laboratory analysis but indications are that they contain oil," Tap Oil said, adding that reservoir quality in the upper part of the Rampayoh Series is unclear and will only be confirmed with further analysis of the well data.

"Once the analysis of all the data has been completed, we will be able issue more definitive statement regarding the potential of Mawar-1 well," the company said.
Mawar-1 is the first well to be drilled in an initial two-well exploration programme in Block M, where Tap is the operator of the block.

It is the first well to be drilled in the block since 1988 and is the first to be drilled by the Block M Joint Venture for the Brunei National Petroleum Corporation (PetroleumBRUNEI).

PetroleumBRUNEI is the regulator of all onshore blocks in Brunei and has commissioned Tap Energy (Borneo) Pty Ltd (39 per cent) who are in cooperation with Triton Borneo Limited (36 per cent), China Sino Oil Company Ltd (21 per cent) and Jana Corp Sdn Bhd (four per cent).-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
