The KJV was commissioned by King James but was compiled/translated by a group around 30 (I think?) scholars of the day. It still holds up quite well even though the English language conventions have changed and we've got a lot more archaeological evidence in terms of manuscripts and fragments of texts than they did 500 years ago. No need to limit yourself to one or the other cos if you understand what you are reading it will (or should) lead you to the same place anyway.
