Australian milk production fell in December compared with the same period last year on the back of tough seasonal conditions in Victoria.

The latest figures from Dairy Australia show December's milk production was 4.5 per cent lower than the previoys December.

Production year-to-date until December was marginally down - 0.2 per cent - on the previous year.
Victoria, which produces about 65 per cent of the national total, led the decline, down 5.9 per cent for December and 1.2 per cent year to date.

Queensland milk production continues to plummet - down 2.6 per cent in December and 1.4 per cent year to date.
NSW (down 1.3 per cent), South Australia (down 5.9 per cent) and Tasmania (down 1.8 per cent) also declined in December

The only state to show growth was Western Australia, where milk production grew 5.3 per cent in December and was up 5.6 per cent year to date.

But fires in the Harvey region in that state last month are likely to impact on milk production there.
The dry conditions throughout Victoria and lower milk prices had an impact.

Gippsland production was down 7.2 per cent in December and 2.3 per cent year to date, while Northern Victorian production was down 4.8 per cent for December and 2.5 per cent year to date.

In Western Victoria, milk production year to date is still tracking slightly ahead of last year (up 1.0 per cent) despite a 5.6 per cent decrease in December.
