IMO reaching TD is important. Regardless of what many may think, there is risk in drilling a hole (down 2 kms as in this instance)! It's certainly not the same as drilling a gold prospect down say 200 metres. Very different.
If you followed the original Alameda-1 hole you will be aware that at about 1.9kms downhole the drilling was stopped temporarily due to unanticipated high pressure. Similarly at Zapato-1 the drill string got stuck at about 1.7kms downhole. The drill operator had to re-establish a side-track hole from about 1.5kms downhole depth.
Having reached TD, and providing at that depth all zones of interest have been intercepted, the operator can then carry out tests on the particular zones of interest.
