I've just walked in, but I bet you theres at least one sale of 1share.... And that causes ALL the others trades in the auction to go at the same LOWER price (usually , dependant on what the algo wants).
So the algo sits there waiting to buy and if it's at or near the head of the buy gueue... It watches all the trades in the auction and adds one extra share to the sell side, just one if there matched,... as there can only be one price in the auction it closes at the lower.... Without that one share would have been 11c.
Go and look at a few closing auctions and see how often it happens... Thats plain in ya face everyday occurrence... No ( over) thinking reqd at all... Have a look.
I was tempted to Lob in a buy in the auction... But got sidetracked

there is a doco on prim or netfix on algos used in stocks, made a few years ago , scary bloody scary and thats years ago !! now? traders are shitting themselves are they a dying breed as algos and ai take over what does that even mean for trading? super funds ect? the futre looks bleak
