How quickly fortunes can be made. OM Holding’s profit after tax for the last six months of 2017 was A$112.7-million compared to a first-half loss of A$21.3-million. The company’s profit after tax for all of 2017 was A$91.4-million vs. a loss of A$16.7-million in 2016. Revenue from operating activities in 2017 was A$988.2-million, a 139% gain from 2017 (A$414.2-million).
OMH sold 1,815,464 mt of manganese ore, a 30% increase from 2016’s 1,398,201 mt, while sales of alloys (ferrosilicon and manganese, rose 183% to 380,090 mt in 2017 vs. 134,313 mt in 2016.
With nine furnaces operating in 2017, ferrosilicon produced and traded from its 75% owned smelter in Sarawak increased by approximately 48% to 185,578 mt with a corresponding revenue contribution of A$274.9-million. In addition, all six modified manganese alloy furnaces producing high carbon ferromanganese and silicomanganese from July 2017 produced 194,512 mt with a revenue contribution of A$282.9-million for 2017. In 2017, Sarawak produced 174,540 mt of ferrosilicon and 173,911 mt of manganese alloys; in 2016 output was 126,261 mt of ferrosilicon and 876 mt of manganese alloys.
The company’s Chinese smelter produced 38,529 mt of manganese alloy and 52,941 mt of manganese sinter ore vs. 5,337 mt and zero, respectively, in 2016.
The company’s Bootu Creek mine, which started in February 2017, and other third party does also increased in 2017. Total manganese ore volume traded increased by 445,049 mt, about 34%, to 1,771,382 mt with a revenue contribution of A$415.8-million in 2017 vs. 1,326,333 mt and Z$236.2-million in 2016.
Bootu Creek alone produced 656,149 t of ore with an average grade of 35.87% Mn in 2017; the mine was closed in 2016. OMM shipped 646,620 mt of Mn ore in 2017 with an average grade of 35.89% Mn. The C1 unit case operating cost for 2017 was A$3.66 per dmtu ($2.81).
