Holy...
Being a humble joint smoking fisherman..you have
amazing quality of thought :)
Every 'thinking' Australian..needs to focus on your
last post.Otherwise, the "last post" will be heard by
many future generations.. dying younger.
Today Courier Mail states that Larissa Waters would
use her skills as an environmental lawyer to lobby
to amend Federal environmental legislation to account
for the impact of coal projects on farm land.
"The 2.2% of good quality agricultural land in Q'ld
needs to be protected ".....she said.
Well Larissa, you are about to learn more facts on how
this country "PROTECTS" most its agricultural soils.
There are 8 organochlorine pesticides registered for use
in Australia..Chloropicrin,dalapon,dicofol,dienochlor,
endosulfan,quintozene,triallate and triclopyr.
Measurable quantities are often found in Australian and
New Zealand public water supplies.
Much research has been undertaken and campaigned against
using chlorine-containing chemicals in agriculture.
However, there are numerous organochlorine pesticides now
in use, which all contain the chlorine molecule.
The people who we pay to guard our health have fallen
for a chemical industry supported posture of "safe until
proved otherwise" which runs contrary to the standards of
care required in all other industries, where at the first
whiff of the hazard, the principle, "dangerous until proved
otherwise"..is evoked.
How many times have we seen aircraft grounded at the
first hint of a technical problem?..how many times have
we seen car and appliance manufactures pull back products
that are faulty?.Yet we have examples of chemicals with
a proven link with cancer still on the market!
A "decade" ago the U.S. EPA considered that "at least"
65% of all pesticides are carcinogenic.
Here is a short list of "daily deadliness"...
2,4-D..
A widely used herbicide, often sprayed from the air to
give it the maximum spread and therefore frequently
drifting into towns,polluting water supplies.Aerial
spraying residue has been detected 90 kms from point
of application.
There have been a striking number of studies linking
phenoxy herbicides with increased soft tissue sarcoma,
non-Hodgkins lymphoma and multiple myeloma in particular.
CAPTAN....
Widely used by commercial growers and home gardeners,
commonly occurring as a residue in fruit and vegetables,
this fungicide is regarded as a "probable" for tumours
of the thyroid, kidneys and digestive tract,as well as
mutations,fetal death and birth defects.
ENDOSULFAN...this pesticide is now linked with Leukaemia
and breast cancer and is extensively used on golf courses and
bowling greens and a wide number of crops in Australia
and NZ. Areas in both countries where it is used show
much higher than average cancer rates.
ATRAZINE...this one is a doosey..with all the attributes
of the above..and is a constant source of contamination
in fruit and vegetables.Sources of DRINKING WATER supply
in Australia..regularly show up with Atrazine residues,
but authorities turn a blind eye and refuse to ban its
use.
Doctors and chemical industry people also die of cancer,
but their general lack of motivation at the power end
of the cancer equation is probably explained by the
syndrome.."it won't happen to me".
Short of a massive plague causing immediate, speedy death
to large numbers of people all in the same community, the
human animal takes "decades" to act over any common
problem.
A complete ban on most pesticides/fungicides in daily
use in agriculture, would clearly be a good place for
you to start your "mission" Larissa.
Your words..."we want to keep our rural communities
alive and protect our farmland"..[with the babe in your
arms]..MUST BE YOUR FIRST PRIORITY.Not a fabrication of
misconduct against Cougar.
PS..perhaps Tony's guiding hand will play a positive
roll in your future decision making processes :)
HM.
