    Papua New Guinea's (PNG) Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare says he is confident a gas pipeline linking PNG's Highlands with Queensland will go ahead.

    Sir Michael has also foreshadowed changes to tax laws to boost investment in the mining sector.

    Sir Michael believes the PNG-Queensland gas pipeline will go ahead, after briefings from a Japanese consortium he says is interested in taking part.

    "And it looks very good, very attractive, that that project is a goer, yes," Sir Michael said.

    Speaking in an interview to be broadcast on ABC Radio's Sunday Profile, Sir Michael said he was looking at ways of boosting interest in PNG's mining sector.

    "I think we have some of the mining rules which are still old Australian rules we opted for and we're still maintaining them," Sir Michael said.
