Someone could have been picking up a lot of cheap shares over the last week. Have not tallied up the volumes but I would see possible strategic positions being taken by various entities.

e.g.

If BHP were serious about a counter offer they would be setting up a position via "on side" institutions.

Also mining investment companies who may be in a position to know another offer is in the wind.

Finally why wouldn't the suitor themeselves be accumulating "on market" at a discount prices via Aussie nominees.

Scenarios are very interesting and don't underestimate the quality of the assets.
