Exciting stuff, only had brief contact with the field many years ago. Looks like fully integrated optoelectronics are now out of the laboratory and starting to have a major impact in the market, for specialist functions at least. IBMs long range stuff is not nanotech, but a faster lower powered replacement of conventional semiconducting tech. Think in Aust, SLX is heavily involved in opto as well, didn't Cao work with them for a while?
