mcginty appears a liitle sceptical

It would seen that Mr McGinty is a little sceptical of Alan Carpenter's appointment. In particular, he doesn't want too much change to policy.

However, by Carpenter's comments tonight, it would appear that changes will occur- hopefully, the allowance of Redport and other miners to mine uranium as soon as possible.

Carpenter out to prove leadership credentials
Energy Minister Alan Carpenter has confirmed he will become Western Australia's next premier.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts has withdrawn from the leadership race, saying Mr Carpenter has her 100 per cent support.

Mr Carpenter will now be elected unopposed when caucus meets on Tuesday.

He says he will have to prove to the people of Western Australia that he is a strong leader.

He says he was shocked by Geoff Gallop's announcement that he was quitting politics to concentrate on overcoming depression.

Mr Carpenter says while he remains a huge supporter of Dr Gallop, he is looking forward to leading the state in his own way.

Despite reports to the contrary, he says he will remain willing to listen and willing to compromise.

"I may have to moderate some aspects of my personality," Mr Carpenter said.

WA Attorney-General and former Labor leader Jim McGinty had been touted as a potential replacement for Dr Gallop.

However, he says he only ever considered himself a reserve.

Mr McGinty says Mr Carpenter will make a great premier but it is important he does not change too much.

"In my experience when people start to try to change their appearance or their personality is when they fail," he said.

"I'm sure Alan Carpenter will remain Alan Carpenter."

Union influence

State Opposition Leader Matt Birney says Mr Carpenter's succession is a sign of how much power the unions wield within the Labor Party.

"The union movement have now delivered to Alan Carpenter the premiership of Western Australia," Mr Birney said.

"He has now set himself up to be the patsy of the union movement - he, like a long list of labor leaders before him, now owes his job to the union movement."

But Mr Carpenter denies he owes the premiership to the unions.

He says he remains unaligned.
