HUNTER Valley wines have helped the McGuigan company win the International Winemaker of the Year title for a record-breaking fourth time.
The victory in the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London was announced on Wednesday night in the UK.
McGuigan, which was founded in the Hunter and is an arm of the ASX-listed Australian Wine Vintage Ltd, had previously been judged International Winemaker of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
Its 2016 win came in competition from the world’s leading wine producing nations, including France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the USA.
McGuigan also won the Australian Producer of the Year title after the IWSC judging panel awarded its wines two trophies and three gold outstanding medals, one gold medal, six silver outstanding, 24 silver and 12 bronze medals.
One of the two trophies was won by the Hunter-sourced 2003 McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon. It was the sixth year in a row that McGuigan claimed the semillon trophy.
The second trophy went to the McGuigan 2007 Langhorne Creek Handmade Shiraz. It and the 2003 Bin 9000 Semillon are both available in limited quantities at the McGuigan Cellar Door in McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin, and on mcguiganwines.com.au.
Australian Vintage Ltd managing director-chief winemaker Neil McGuigan said that the IWSC successes were “extremely humbling”.
To be the only wine producer crowned International Winemaker of the Year four times was a great achievement for McGuigan and the Australian wine industry.
“Every time an Australian wine or producer is acknowledged at an international wine competition, our products are put on the map and people sit up and take notice,” he said.
