As to the race issue, it wasn't until 1967 that indigenous people were officially recognised as human in Australia. Before that they were counted as part of the fauna of Australia.

Happening at the same time in the US was the civil liberties movement for equal rights for all humans. We we really THAT bad? Pretty repulsive thinking about it.
Unfortunately those views still live through the older generations but thankfully such views are not being passed on as the elderly die out.
