If I'm recalling correctly, he did his original drilling at Andover a decade or two when nickel was the crash hot place to be, and was simultaneously drilling somewhere else on a different project.
That project had better immediate results, so he shelved Andover and left it for ages despite multiple parties being interested over the years and only let AZS have it in the end supposedly because of the Tony and Marks history and the Nova find and that they agreed to let mark keep 40%
If you were of a mind you could see mark retaining 40% as confidence in the land, but being unwilling to put the time and energy and money into Andover himself.
Or just being prudent in keeping a major stake incase anything great happened.
Regardless of why he did it originally the multimillion dollar on market activity suggests he's suddenly a lot more confident. Or perhaps hes just pumping up the price so he can bail.
Anything is possible.
