"Does anyone else think that the media almost loves a disaster like trapped miners, bush fires and floods?"

Of course. It lifts newspaper sales, lifts tv channel ratings, etc.

On the positive side, media exposure helps unite the public in times of adversity, shows the humane side of politicians, and enhances donations to relief efforts....

On the negative side, the reporters can be just a little insensitive with their search for sensationalism & sometimes sail a bit close to the wind. I must say in the instance of these floods they've been quite diplomatic. But in the past I've seen some shockers......
Like a chap who has lost everything....house, possessions, family members, pets....and has a camera and microphone shoved in his face and asked :"How do you feel.....?"
I have seen it & cringed.....
    Very silly & potentially dangerous.....

Hey, hopefully all is on a gradual mend, now, and the news from now will be good......the selfless help and heroism of many should be reported....
