MEDIA RELEASE
10th November 2005
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO AWB/OIL-FOR-FOOD The announcement of terms of reference for the inquiry into the Oil-for-Food scandal by Attorney-General Philip Ruddock was welcomed today by the PGA. The inquiry, established under the Royal Commissions Act 1902, will examine whether any acts by AWB, or other Australian companies, in relation to the Oil-for-Food programme, breached the law.
PGA Western Graingrowers Chairman Leon Bradley acknowledged that the government had given the inquiry the powers it needs to get to the truth. “We were never worried about whether it was called a Royal Commission,” said Mr Bradley, “We asked the Prime Minister for an inquiry that would be very independent, and have the power to protect witnesses.” “We wanted a Commissioner who would be thorough and objective.” “It is fair to say that we got the inquiry that is warranted by the seriousness of the issues involved.”
