I have been a holder of a variable number of SYR shares since its foundation in 2007. I recall it as an offspring of CSE. CSE has always been a roller coaster ride and I am probably break-even over the years, but ever hopeful.
The last year has been the worse I can recall. Following a year high of $2.69 and hopes of $3.00 plus we instead plunged to $0.42 just a week ago, so the recovery to $0.74 is hardly exciting.
My view is: graphite pricing is manipulated by China; it is difficult to know what China's reserves are; China's potential to produce synthetic graphite at an ongoing competitive price is unknown; and/or other technologies may compete with graphite in the future. Not to mention political issues!
I think SYR share price is erratic and could fail so it is a risky share. Why erratic? I did some numbers on the churn rate on our 673 million issued shares, typically well under 1% on any trading day, until recently. Today's 6 million was 4%; yesterday's 6.6 million was almost 10%; the past 5 days has been 25%; back to 13/09/2023 to churn 50%; and 26/05/2023 to churn all 100%.
This seems to be to be speculation or gambling by shorters but not the way I understand shorters. Professional shorters undertake analysis of a company and find good reason to consider it grossly overpriced, then short sell shares and encourage the broader market to review and recognise this over-valuation and start selling their shares. Shorter makes their milk. Then some panic and shares are oversold. Shorter makes the cream. It is impossible to even guess what is going on with SYR.
My guess and hope is SYR gets back to $3 and onwards to $10 plus.
