A PHEV can be driven directly by the electric motor or the gasoline engine. An EREV (extended range EV) has a larger battery pack and runs on electricity only, with its gasoline engine serving as a power bank to recharge the batteries when they run low.

I'm wondering what the energy ratio is. How much less gasoline does it use to recharge compared to an ICE vehicle driving the same distance. EV's are more efficient because they don't use any energy stopped at lights or traffic while the ICE still ticks over.

Adams Intelligence must be counting EREV's as PHEV's. It would explain their increase in PHEV average battery size.
