This is a good question and the answer is relatively simple.
In statistical survival analysis this is called right censoring where the actual event (death in this case) has not occured and is unknown whether it will occur at the time of analysis. The survival analysis actually encompasses this aspect of the data for both control and treatment arms with outcomes reported in relative risk between the two groups (treatment and control) at the time of analysis (ie the Hazard Ratio).
