"My understanding is that its not a must sell situation for the index funds,? they can still hold the stock but because it will (hypothetically ) fall out of the ASX 200, index funds will not be able to BUY...??" I believe this to be correct as well. If index funds had to sell everytime a company dropped out of the 100, 200 etc the sharemarket would be an even bigger rollercoaster than it is with companies facing major share price hits if they slip out.
