I could not remember exactly where or when I heard this from the Prof but if I remember correctly, he did say that surgery is almost always necessary as part of a solid cancer treatment. That is why immunotherapy that works is so important. It can't eradicate the solid cancer totally but what it can do is reduced the cancer size into a very small area that can be safely removed surgically. Much better than having to cut off bigger chunks of say a liver or pancreas, etc.

Above is just my recollection so I could well have remembered wrongly. But it did stuck in my mind when I heard it.
