Great post @ywtoh, thanks for sharing. By any chance you didn't write the following article did you? It covers some of what you wrote in your post. It was posted on the Anhui Zhengyi Water Company website. It discusses future breakthroughs in sewage treatment technology and has a small focus on the unique characteristics of MABR technology. I've selected and highlighted some of the more relevant text.

"Some Directions, Laws, and Applications of Future Sewage Treatment Process Development (I)
3 The law of process development
3.1 Innovation takes a long time to accumulate
The innovation of sewage treatment process has never been an overnight matter. The appearance of a certain technology has a complicated historical background.
Take ... as an example... aerobic granular sludge technology, which is widely viewed today, has also undergone a long and early development, from the concept originally proposed by the early Japanese scholars in 1991 to the first urban sewage based on aerobic granular sludge design in 2011
In fact, even the formation of a concept will take decades to be finally accepted... Therefore, the emergence of innovative technologies is a natural and well-accepted process, not a subversive overnight...
3.3 Towards a mature law of development
Sewage treatment technology has intrinsic laws from innovation to maturity. Basically, this law is based on the exploration of early phenomena, the study of laboratories, the introduction of basic theories, further amplified experiments, the further improvement of theory, and the appearance of demonstration projects. To the final number of engineering applications. As with the laws of other technologies, the maturity of wastewater treatment technology can be reflected by S-curve. The S-curve describes the life cycle of the technology system, including the budding period, growth period, maturity period, and recession period...
Although technology in its infancy has new technical capabilities, the technology at this stage is clearly at the beginning, and there are problems with low efficiency, poor reliability, or some unresolved issues. Because people are more difficult to grasp its future, and the risk is greater, so only a small number of unique vision will invest, at this stage of the technology can obtain human and material input is very limited, such as microbial fuel cell technology . The technical performance in the embryonic stage is very slow. The level of patents generated during this stage is high, but the number of patents is small, and the economic return at this stage is negative...
After entering the development period, various problems that originally existed were gradually solved, and efficiency and product reliability were greatly improved. Their value began to be widely recognized by the society, and their development potential began to show, which attracted a large amount of human and financial resources.
Investing large amounts of capital will promote the rapid development of technology systems. Especially when sewage treatment technology enters the scale of production, it often enters growth stage.
In the case of obtaining a large amount of resources, the technology enters the mature period quickly from the growth stage. At this time, the technical system tends to be perfect. Most of the work carried out is only a partial improvement and improvement of the system. The maturity level of the technology is at its best, and a large amount of patents will still be generated at this time, but the patent level will be lower, and some spam patents will also be generated in large quantities. The products at this stage have entered large-scale production and received huge profits. The conventional conventional activated sludge process, oxidation ditch, SBR technology, etc. are basically at this stage. After entering the mature period, technology will gradually enter the recession period. At this point, the technology has reached its limit, and the development of the process will no longer have new breakthroughs."
Right now we're budding - and soon to hit 'growth' stage. It appears that at least the tech is moving in the right direction. Thanks for posting.
