Welcome to Fluence and the third quarter edition of our newsletter, inFluence!
Plans are underway for another sensational Fluence exhibition at WEFTEC in the “Windy City” September 23-25. Fluence will host three presentations at our booth both Monday and Tuesday, highlighting the Ivory Coast project, MABR technology, and aeration technology. In addition, Ronen Shechter, Chief Technology Officer, will present in the WEF Technical sessions on Wednesday morning, “Comparative Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Different Degrees of Distribution for Wastewater Treatment Using Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactors” in room S403b. If you would like to be our guest to the exhibit hall, visit the registration pageand use our code EVITE3742!
Hope to see you in Chicago!

Project Spotlight
Highway projects in China keep growing
The strong cooperation with ITEST in China is taking off after the first succesful project in Xiaogan Highway Service Area.
The 3-year strategic partnership enabled Fluence Corporation to sign three contracts to supply 75 Aspiral units (L4 & S1 models) for Hubei Highway System.
Commenting on this project, Ms. Du, Managing Director of Hubei ITEST said: "To some extent, this project is a cross-cultural collaboration between China and the West. Despite the background differences, we could agree on the scope of work and on the relevance of environmental protection in transportation field, which is an important factor for us in order to maintain continuous cooperation. In the future, we foresee on-going work together on technology optimization and market promotion".
The Aspiral L4 models are deployed at parking lots and service areasand the S1 models will be deployed at toll stations and will treat up to 75m3/d.

Meet the TeamA quick Q&A with Fluence Chief Technology Officer, Ronen Schechter
Ronen serves as the Chief Technology Officer of Fluence. He has over 25 years of experience in water and wastewater technology and has over a dozen patents and pending applications in the field.
inFluence: You served as CTO at Emefcy for over nine years prior to joining Fluence. Tell us more about your current team and the potentiality for the future.
RS: As I see it, Fluence is building up to become a networked collaborative global organization. As such, anybody interested and active in developing new offerings for our company through technology development is actually part of the team. We have technology leader’s working to make it happen through annual forums, where we update each other and decide on joint topics of interest for collaborative development. So I am looking forward to a future of Fluence experts from all over the world jointly creating new products and processes for our sales teams to offer.
The people already involved in leading corporate technology strategy are Maurizio Tiarca from Italy; Manu Garcia de la Mata from Argentina; Bob Mangaudis through his team including Jim Ellis and Jeremy Wurpts; Yaron Bar Tal and Lotan Dagai from Israel; Erik Arfalk and Udi Tirosh from Marketing.inFluence: What’s cooking up in the R&D department?
RS: Fluence is actually involved in many technologies for water and wastewater treatment.
Meanwhile, in Israel we are doing small-scale testing of longer term ideas that will later go into engineering development on their way to commercial implementation. Some of these topics are collaborative - such as microbial electrolysis cells for enhancing anaerobic digesters, together with the experts in our Italy BU; Or our River Water treatment in China using MABR, with the support of our China BU.
Other topics coming up are: supernatant treatment with MABR using oxygen-enriched air and electrocoagulation applications for water and wastewater treatment.
The engineering R&D team in Israel, led by Lotan Dagai, has already started validating part of these process ideas, and is planning to expand this activity into next year.
For example – the idea to treat river water in China is already installed in full scale and ready to start in collaboration with a local partner; Another example is supernatant treatment in MABR already running on pilot scale after months of lab testing.
R&D is also investigating coupling MABR with anaerobic digestion, developing a ZLD offering based on improvements of the process design used in a project in the USA, expanding reuse solutions from Argentina to other parts of the world, and promoting distributed planning over centralized solutions and others.
inFluence: You speak at many conferences and seminars as an expert of MABR and electrogenic bio-reactors (EBR) for wastewater treatment. Where we can find you for your next conference?RS: The very next presentation will be at the WEFTEC conference at McCormick Place, Room S403b, 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM.
Although the formal title is on the cost benefit of distributed planning, I will take the opportunity to update on Fluence MABR technology and the Mayan-Zvi retrofit project. Anyone interested in MABR should come up to the conference rooms and listen in on this presentation as well as insights and progress from other presentations.
